A recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey reveals that 68% of likely voters say they support requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in national elections. Only 22% say they disagree with such a requirement.
Additionally, 72% of voters say they believe it is important to prevent illegal immigrants from voting, with 59% saying it’s very important.
Support for requiring proof of citizenship spans across political lines: 81% of Republicans, 56% of Democrats, and 69% of unaffiliated voters say they favor a law mandating proof of citizenship for voter registration.
The survey also indicates that 62% of voters say they would have supported a government shutdown to pass the proof-of-citizenship measure, while 32% say they oppose shutting down the government over this issue.
